BE INSPIRED with VEE SPEERS
Vee Speers’ workshop opens a new way of channeling creative energy during 3 exciting days of self-discovery and inspiration. Vee will present and share her unique approach to the portrait and her many inspirations, followed by questions and answers . We will work together in groups but you will also get one to one sessions with Vee. Each participant will have the opportunity to present their work and receive advice on how to develop the art of storytelling through portraits, costumes and props.
This intense workshop will guide you to find your own individual style in photography and create images that are not just ‘pretty’ but that inspire emotion. You will explore the importance of visual story-telling with basic resources through a natural, simple and uncomplicated approach. The emphasis will be on concept, working with the beauty of natural light and how to direct the model. You will learn about the editing process, while discussing and presenting your work to the group.
Vee´s workshop is limited to 15 participants and is suited for all levels.
Just bring yourself, your camera and laptop.
“I don’t like to follow the crowd. I like to seduce, with images that are at once disturbing and beautiful, but leaving a space for the viewer to enter my world.” - Vee Speer
VEE SPEERS
Vee Speers, a Paris-based Australian artist, fell in love with photography at an early age, assisting her father in the darkroom, mesmerized by seeing his portraits appear like magic. Following art school in Brisbane in the 80’s, Speers worked as a Stills Photographer at the ABC Television in Sydney. In 1990, a short stay in France became a permanent move to Paris, a place with ‘unlimited potential and endless creative inspiration’. By the end of the 90’s, Speers’ path was being forged as a photo artist, and since then she has been engaging viewers around the world with the dramatic tension of her story-telling through portraiture. Speers’ major breakthrough came in 2001 with her series Bordello Speers where she created edgy photos that play with seduction, sensuality and femininity.
Vee Speers is perhaps best known for The Birthday Party, a series of short stories linked by the thread of an imaginary birthday party. This is an anarchistic world which belongs only to children. There are no adults to give orders, and the children rule.
Speers photographed her youngest daughter and her friends in different outfits inspired by an imaginary party, using the washed out colour pallet and strange costumes to create a timeless quality. The children stare openly at the camera, but very little is revealed of themselves. In contradiction to ‘the happiest days of our lives’, these images reveal a side of childhood that is not care-free or clichéd, exploring a range of emotions and definitions which are part of an imperfect world. The Birthday Party is punctuated with symbols of war and sees the characters responding on different levels, striking a chord within us to trigger our own concerns in relation to today's paranoid society.
